Indigenous Ministry

Historically the Christian Brothers in Holy Spirit Province have been connected and engaged in Indigenous Ministry since the early 1960’s when young men and their families found their way Trinity, Aquinas and Clontarf to be educated. This connection with Indigenous Ministry continued to be been nurtured and strengthened when the Brothers went to Broome and set up Nulungu College in 1971. This was followed by the decision to be involved in the establishment of Clontarf Aboriginal College in 1986, in Perth.

Since these early years Holy Spirit Province has further raised the profile by appointing Indigenous people to work in partnership with the Brothers at Province and National level.

Today Indigenous Ministry in Holy Spirit Province is one tangible way in which the vision of Edmund Rice can be connected and grounded in the spirituality of the land.

The work of Indigenous Ministry is to connect with schools and ministries to promote awareness and inclusivity of the Indigenous story. Strategically it is a way of working with and educating young Australians of the future to become engaged in promoting a positive path for reconciliation.

Indigenous people together with Christian Brothers developed a national strategy and a mandate for Indigenous Ministry.

“Edmund Rice National Statement of Reconciliation

Living and Working Together in the Spirit”

This came from the National Coordinating Group: Indigenous Ministry (NCG:IM) Conference at Fremantle WA in 2002.
